SPOILERS CONTAINED!!!! I'm working on a novel called What Happens when You Don't Know Anything . It's an experimental novel in many ways, combing influences from JD Salinger, Bret Easton Ellis and Chuck Palahniuk. The novel is told primary in first person present tense, with occasional shifts to second person. The protagonist, jimmy Evans, is a degenerate gambler, alcoholic and ignoramus, hence the title of the novel. The scene below is chapter sixteen is is very very unusual. I’ve used this space to talk about this before, but I want to do so again. My wife and I have chosen not to have kids. I won't get into all the reasons for this, because it's very personal and no one's business but our ours. nonetheless, we consider ourselves parents. Of dogs . Folks that have biological children to care for perhaps don't understand this, but,we love our dogs as much as a we would love a human child. They are our babies. The unfortunate part of being a dog parent is that you are, in all likelihood, going to outlive your child. Parents of human children generally aren't going to experience this, and this puts pet parents in a unique and terrible position. Every ten or fifteen years, they will go through a grief cycle over the loss of their child. Each time rips your heart out, but you take comfort in new dogs to love and care for and in being able to share that grief with others. Hot Pink Lipstick It was the first dead body I’d seen, waxy soulless. Hot pink lipstick: I laughed at the choice. Painted cheeks, rosy like those of a doll. Hands that had held mine stroked my hair, prepared my dinner, now stiff, folded angelic, no longer capable of love or embrace. My grandmother in a box lined with silk, optimum comfort for the dead, lips closed, unsmiling blue eyes hiding behind shaded lids. Red hair that had been dyed the day of her death, her final living act, unknown.
